History
Aeroméxico traces its origin to Aeronaves de México, founded in 1934, which was nationalized in 1959 and shortened its name to Aeroméxico in 1972. The airline went bankrupt and was grounded for several months in 1988 before being reprivatized, and more recently filed for U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2020 amid the COVID-19 collapse in travel demand, emerging restructured in 2022 with Delta Air Lines (a longtime minority shareholder and SkyTeam co-founder alongside Aeroméxico) increasing its financial involvement.
Current Operations
Aeroméxico's main hub is Mexico City International Airport, with secondary bases in Guadalajara and Monterrey, serving over 120 destinations across Mexico, North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. It flies an all-Boeing mainline fleet — including 787 Dreamliners and 737 MAX narrowbodies — supplemented by regional turboprops operated through its Aeroméxico Connect subsidiary, and remains a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance.
