S7 Airlines

History

S7 Airlines descends from Siberia Airlines, formed in 1992 out of the Tolmachevo aviation detachment that had operated since the Soviet era, and privatized in 1994 following the breakup of the USSR's state airline system. The carrier rebranded as S7 Airlines in 2005 as part of a broader modernization push, adopting a new livery and pursuing an all-Airbus narrowbody fleet strategy. Under its holding company, S7 Group, the airline grew into Russia's largest privately-owned carrier and one of its biggest airlines overall, joining the Oneworld alliance in 2010 as its first Russian member. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 fundamentally altered the airline's trajectory: Western sanctions barred it from EU airspace, cut off Airbus parts and maintenance support, and led Oneworld to suspend its membership. Since then S7 has leaned heavily on domestic Russian flying and aircraft sourced or maintained through sanctions workarounds, including a government-backed 2023 agreement to acquire dozens of aircraft with National Wealth Fund support.

Current Operations

S7 Airlines today operates a shrunken Airbus A320/A321 fleet supplemented by Soviet-designed Tupolev Tu-214s and Embraer E170 regional jets, a mix reflecting difficulty sourcing Western spare parts under sanctions; the operationally available fleet is well below its pre-2022 size. The carrier's route network is now overwhelmingly domestic, covering roughly a dozen countries and around 130 routes, almost entirely within Russia and a handful of CIS and other non-sanctioning destinations. Its two hubs remain Domodedovo International Airport (DME) in Moscow and Tolmachevo Airport (OVB) in Novosibirsk, its historical home base in Siberia. Maintenance strain has forced the carrier to begin retiring newer A320neo/A321neo jets whose Pratt & Whitney geared-turbofan engines cannot be properly serviced under current sanctions, even as S7 continues to operate as Russia's largest privately held airline by fleet and passenger volume.
