History

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) was founded on 29 October 1992 as a successor to the Soviet-era Ukraine Airlines, created as Ukraine's first modern national carrier with aircraft initially leased from Ireland's Guinness Peat Aviation, and it launched scheduled service to major European capitals starting in November 1992. Over the following two decades UIA grew into Ukraine's flag carrier and largest airline, building a hub-and-spoke network from Kyiv Boryspil International Airport and adding long-haul routes, including nonstop service to New York-JFK in 2014. By 2013, ownership had consolidated around Ukraine-based Capital Investment Project LLC (74%) and Cyprus-registered Ontobet Promotions (26%), with businessmen Ihor Kolomoiskyi and Aron Mayberg central to the airline's ownership structure. The carrier was already under financial strain from 2016 onward when Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 forced the closure of Ukrainian airspace to civil aviation; UIA suspended all flights on 24 February 2022 and never resumed scheduled passenger service. Compounded by shareholder disputes, aircraft lessors reclaiming its fleet, and debts exceeding 20 billion Ukrainian hryvnia, UIA entered court-supervised bankruptcy administration in November 2023, and as of 2026 the airline remains grounded with no confirmed relaunch.

Current Operations

Ukraine International Airlines has not operated any scheduled passenger flights since 24 February 2022, when Russia's full-scale invasion prompted the closure of Ukrainian civil airspace, and as of 2026 that airspace remains closed to commercial traffic. The airline's pre-war fleet of around 25 aircraft, including Boeing 737-800/900ER, 767-300ER, and 777-300 jets alongside Embraer E190/E195s, was progressively repossessed by lessors after the carrier stopped meeting its obligations, and UIA has been in formal bankruptcy administration since November 2023 over debts exceeding 20 billion hryvnia. There is no functioning route network, hub operation, or active fleet to report; the carrier exists only as an entity in insolvency proceedings, with portions of its property sold at creditor auctions. Ukrainian authorities have discussed a phased reopening of national airspace, tentatively beginning with western airports such as Lviv, once security conditions allow, but no firm timeline was confirmed as of mid-2026, and UIA has given no indication it intends to resume flying under its own brand. Ukrainian travelers currently rely on other carriers operating via neighboring countries' airports, such as Chisinau, Rzeszów, and Warsaw, rather than any active Ukrainian hub.
