History

Garuda Indonesia traces its roots to Indonesian Airways, established 26 January 1949 and renamed Garuda Indonesian Airways later that year as the country's flag carrier. The airline grew into Indonesia's principal international carrier over subsequent decades, joining the SkyTeam alliance on 5 March 2014 after a 2009 "Quantum Leap" modernization program helped it earn a 5-star Skytrax rating by 2014. Garuda was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, accumulating roughly $9.8 billion in debt by the end of 2021, and completed a major creditor-approved debt restructuring in 2022 (including U.S. Chapter 15 proceedings) that kept the airline flying rather than going into bankruptcy.

Current Operations

Garuda Indonesia operates a fleet of roughly 140 aircraft from hubs at Jakarta's Soekarno–Hatta (CGK) and Denpasar/Bali (DPS), with additional operations from Makassar (UPG) and Medan (KNO), serving domestic Indonesian routes plus regional and long-haul international destinations as a SkyTeam member. The airline remains majority state-owned (largely through Indonesia's Danantara sovereign wealth vehicle) with a minority stake held by CT Corp, and financial pressure has persisted post-restructuring: Garuda reported a net loss of roughly $318 million for 2025, and in 2026 Skytrax reportedly downgraded its rating from 5-star to 4-star status. As of 2026 the carrier's finances and service quality remain a live, closely watched story rather than a fully settled turnaround.
