History
Hong Kong Airlines traces back to CR Airways, established in 2001, which was acquired by Hainan Airlines Group in 2006 and rebranded as Hong Kong Airlines. It built out an Airbus A330 and, from 2017, A350-900 widebody fleet to pursue long-haul ambitions including a short-lived London Gatwick route (2012) and new North American services, positioning itself as a full-service rival to Cathay Pacific out of Hong Kong International Airport. The airline ran into severe financial distress starting in 2018, with a leadership exodus, announced fleet cuts in 2019, and reported inability to pay staff salaries on time by late 2019, followed by a further pandemic-driven downturn in 2020 that forced it to withdraw most long-haul flying.
Current Operations
As of 2026, Hong Kong Airlines operates a narrowed network of roughly 40 mostly regional Asia-Pacific destinations from its Hong Kong International Airport hub, using a fleet of around 26 Airbus A320-family and A330 aircraft after retreating from long-haul widebody flying during its 2019-2020 financial crisis. Ownership passed from Hainan Airlines-linked HNA Group to mainland Chinese investor Liaoning Fangda Group in 2021 amid the restructuring, and the carrier has since reported a gradual recovery, reportedly resuming some long-haul routes such as Gold Coast and Vancouver from January 2025. It is not a member of a major global alliance and runs the Fortune Wings Club loyalty program shared with sister carriers.
