History
JetBlue Airways was founded by airline entrepreneur David Neeleman, who incorporated the company in Delaware in August 1998 under the working name NewAir before launching commercial service on 11 February 2000 from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Conceived as a low-fare carrier with a premium onboard experience — leather seats, free live satellite television, and generous legroom — JetBlue grew rapidly in the 2000s, going public in an April 2002 IPO that raised $260 million, and opened its own purpose-built Terminal 5 at JFK in 2008 at a cost of roughly $800 million. The airline introduced its Mint premium transcontinental cabin in 2014 and expanded into transatlantic service in 2021 with flights to London, later adding Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, and Edinburgh. JetBlue's most consequential recent chapter was its attempted $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines, which a federal judge blocked on antitrust grounds in January 2024; the two carriers formally called off the deal in March 2024, with JetBlue paying a $69 million breakup fee. Joanna Geraghty became CEO in February 2024, the first woman to lead a major U.S. airline, as the carrier has since worked to stabilize its finances amid broader industry pressure.
Current Operations
JetBlue operates roughly 290 aircraft, an all-Airbus narrowbody fleet spanning the A220, A320, and A321 family (including long-range A321LR/XLR variants for transatlantic routes), having retired its last Embraer E190s in September 2025. The carrier serves around 100 destinations across the Americas and a growing set of European cities, anchored by primary hubs at New York-JFK, Boston Logan, and Fort Lauderdale, with additional focus-city operations in Orlando and San Juan. JetBlue holds no global alliance membership but maintains codeshare and loyalty partnerships with carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines. The airline has faced continued financial pressure into 2026, including a DOT fine over chronic flight delays and reports of it exploring strategic options amid founder David Neeleman's public warnings about its financial trajectory, even as management points to newly secured debt financing to support its turnaround plan.
