History

Royal Air Maroc traces its origins to the 1953 merger of two earlier Moroccan carriers, Compagnie Chérifienne de l'Air (founded 1946) and Air Maroc (founded 1947), and formally adopted its current name on 28 June 1957, shortly after Morocco gained independence from France. Since then it has operated as the country's flag carrier and a central instrument of national transport policy, remaining majority state-owned — the Moroccan government and the Hassan II Fund for Economic and Social Development together control the large majority of shares, with Air France and Iberia holding small minority stakes. The airline achieved a major strategic milestone on 1 April 2020 when it became the first oneworld member from the African continent, tying its network more closely to global partners such as British Airways and Qatar Airways. Royal Air Maroc has pursued significant fleet and network expansion in the 2020s, driven by rising demand from Moroccan tourism and by preparations to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. In 2023 the carrier outlined plans to roughly double its fleet over the following decade and tendered for as many as 200 additional aircraft to support that growth.

Current Operations

Royal Air Maroc operates a mixed fleet spanning Boeing 787 Dreamliners for long-haul routes, Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 737-800 narrowbodies for medium-haul and domestic service, plus Embraer E190 jets and ATR turboprops for regional connections. The airline serves around 134 routes to roughly 45 countries across Africa, Europe, North America, Asia, and South America, radiating from its primary hub at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca. As Africa's flagship oneworld member, it provides Moroccan and regional travelers with extensive codeshare connectivity to the alliance's global network. Ongoing fleet growth and new aircraft deliveries, including a 2023 lease agreement for additional 737s, are aimed at supporting both World Cup-related capacity needs and Morocco's broader tourism growth targets through 2030.
