History

Alaska Airlines traces its origins to 1932, when Linious 'Mac' McGee founded McGee Airways in Anchorage; the carrier adopted the Alaska Airlines name in 1944 after merging with several other regional Alaskan operators. The airline grew from a bush-flying operation into a major West Coast carrier, and in 1985 Alaska Air Group was created as its parent holding company, which also acquired Horizon Air the following year. The group expanded significantly through its 2016 acquisition of Virgin America for about $2.6 billion, fully retiring the Virgin America brand by 2019 while absorbing its transcontinental and California routes. In December 2023, Alaska Air Group announced its largest acquisition yet, Hawaiian Airlines, in a deal worth roughly $1.9 billion; the merger cleared antitrust and regulatory review in 2024 and officially closed on 18 September 2024. Both the Alaska and Hawaiian brands, alongside regional subsidiary Horizon Air, continue operating under the combined Alaska Air Group umbrella, giving the company a coast-to-coast and trans-Pacific network.

Current Operations

Following the Hawaiian Airlines merger, Alaska Air Group's combined fleet totals roughly 340 aircraft: Alaska Airlines' mainline Boeing 737s and growing 787 Dreamliner fleet, Hawaiian's Airbus A321neo, A330, and Boeing 717 aircraft, and Horizon Air's Embraer E175 regional jets. The group's network is anchored by hubs at Seattle-Tacoma, Portland, Anchorage, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu following the Hawaiian integration. Alaska Airlines has been a full member of the oneworld alliance since 2021, giving passengers access to global partner networks alongside its own extensive domestic and increasingly international route map. Since the September 2024 merger closed, the group has been integrating Hawaiian's long-haul Pacific routes with Alaska's North American network while keeping both brands operating separately for the time being. Alaska Air Group ranks among the largest US carriers by fleet size and passenger volume, with continued investment in 787 widebodies to expand international long-haul service.
