Flybe

History

Flybe traced its roots to Jersey European Airways, founded in 1979 through the merger of Intra Airways and Express Air Services; the carrier was renamed British European in 2000 and rebranded as Flybe in 2002. Based first at Exeter and later at Birmingham, it grew into Europe's largest regional airline after acquiring BA Connect in 2006, operating an extensive network of short UK domestic and near-Europe regional routes using turboprop and regional jet aircraft.

Current Operations

Flybe no longer operates. The original airline ceased trading and entered administration on 5 March 2020 after failing to secure a rescue package. Its brand and assets were subsequently bought by Cyrus Capital's Thyme Opco vehicle, and a relaunched Flybe resumed flying from Birmingham in April 2022 — but this second incarnation also collapsed into administration on 28 January 2023 and was wound down by mid-February 2023, with its valuable Heathrow slots reverting to British Airways. As of 2026 there has been no further relaunch and no successor airline operates under the Flybe brand.
