History
Jet Airways was founded on 1 April 1993 and began commercial operations that May as an air taxi operator, expanding into full-service domestic operations by 1995 and adding international flights from 2004. At its peak around 2016 it was India's leading full-service carrier, holding roughly a fifth of the domestic market and operating over 300 daily flights to about 74 destinations from hubs including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai, plus a European gateway at Amsterdam. Mounting debt forced it to suspend all flights on 17 April 2019, after which lenders placed the company into insolvency proceedings.
Current Operations
Jet Airways has not flown since April 2019. A consortium led by Murari Lal Jalan and UK-based Kalrock Capital won approval to take over the airline in 2021 and obtained an air operator's certificate in May 2022, but repeatedly failed to meet required financial commitments and never resumed commercial flights. India's Supreme Court ordered the company into liquidation on 7 November 2024 after finding the consortium had not fulfilled its revival plan, and as of 2026 Jet Airways remains defunct, with no successor airline having taken over its brand, slots or routes.
