History

Luxair was founded in 1961 to meet growing demand for Luxembourg's international air links, building on an earlier, short-lived national carrier called Luxembourg Airlines that had operated from 1948. The airline formally took the Luxair name in 1962 and opened service with a Fokker F27 Friendship flying between Luxembourg and Paris, later introducing jet equipment with Sud Aviation Caravelles in 1970 and Boeing 707s and 737-200s through the mid-to-late 1970s. Over subsequent decades Luxembourg's flag carrier built out a European, North African and Middle Eastern network from its single home base at Luxembourg Findel Airport, transitioning to an all-jet fleet in the mid-2000s before reintroducing turboprops for regional routes. Lufthansa, a long-time minority shareholder, sold its roughly 13% stake to the Luxembourg government in 2015, consolidating state control. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg remains by far the largest shareholder today, holding a controlling stake both directly and through state-owned financial institutions.

Current Operations

Luxair operates a mixed fleet centered on Boeing 737-700/800 and newer 737 MAX aircraft for its mainline scheduled and charter network, complemented by Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 turboprops for shorter regional routes and Embraer E195-E2 jets recently added to the fleet. From its sole hub at Luxembourg Airport (LUX), the airline serves roughly 80 scheduled and charter destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and parts of the Middle East. As Luxembourg's only scheduled passenger airline, Luxair plays an outsized role connecting the small Grand Duchy to the wider world and also operates a substantial package-holiday business (LuxairTours). The airline is not aligned with any of the three major global alliances but maintains bilateral codeshare agreements with several European and long-haul carriers. Fleet renewal remains an active priority, with 737 MAX 7 and MAX 10 variants on order to gradually replace older Next-Generation 737s.
