History
AirAsia traces its roots to a Malaysian government-owned carrier established on 20 December 1993 and launched in 1996, but the airline as known today dates to 2 September 2001, when entrepreneurs Tony Fernandes and Kamarudin Meranun acquired the heavily indebted company for a symbolic RM1 (plus its debts) and relaunched it as Southeast Asia's first true low-cost carrier in January 2002. Backed by the "Now Everyone Can Fly" positioning, AirAsia expanded rapidly across Malaysia and into affiliated units in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and elsewhere, and was voted the World's Best Low-Cost Airline at the Skytrax awards for eleven consecutive years (2009-2019). The group restructured its holding company as Capital A Bhd in January 2022 following the COVID-19 downturn.
Current Operations
AirAsia (Malaysia) operates an all-Airbus narrowbody fleet built around the A320 and A321 families, including A321neo aircraft, from its main hub at klia2 (Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2), with additional domestic/regional bases in Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and Johor Bahru (Senai). It flies a dense short- and medium-haul network across Malaysia and Southeast Asia, with connections into China, India, and Australia, and remains outside the three major global alliances, relying instead on its own AirAsia group network and bilateral partnerships. The airline is a subsidiary of Capital A Bhd (formerly AirAsia Group Bhd), which has been pursuing a broader turnaround and fleet-renewal strategy, including a widely reported large order for Airbus A220 aircraft announced in 2026.
