History
Air Algérie was formed on 23 May 1953 through the merger of two French colonial-era carriers, Compagnie Générale de Transports Aériens (CGTA) and Compagnie Air Transport (CAT). Following Algeria's independence in 1962 the Algerian state progressively increased its ownership stake, reaching full (100%) government ownership by 1972, and the carrier became Algeria's flag airline. It has since grown into the country's dominant airline, serving both an extensive domestic network and international routes across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America.
Current Operations
As of 2026 Air Algérie remains 100% owned by the Algerian government and operates a mixed fleet including Boeing 737-800s, Boeing 767-300s, Airbus A330-200s and ATR 72-500s, with new A330-900s, A350-1000s and 737 MAX 9s on order to modernize and expand capacity. It flies from hubs at Algiers and Oran to roughly 33 domestic destinations and around 42 international destinations in some 28 countries. The airline is not a member of any global alliance but maintains bilateral codeshare agreements, including with Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways, and has reportedly been loss-making in recent years.
