History

Air Mauritius was founded on 14 June 1967 and began flight operations in 1972, initially on regional routes before launching long-haul service to Europe in 1977. It became the first airline in the Southern Hemisphere to fly the Airbus A340-300 in 1994 and listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius in 1995. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the carrier hard, forcing it into voluntary administration in 2020 before it exited the process and resumed normal operations in 2021.

Current Operations

Air Mauritius operates from its hub at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, flying an Airbus-centered fleet including A330-900neo widebodies (with A350-900 deliveries reported for 2025-2026) alongside ATR 42 turboprops on regional routes, serving roughly 20-plus destinations across Africa, Europe and Asia. It remains majority-owned by Mauritian government-linked shareholders through Air Mauritius Holdings, participates in the regional Vanilla Alliance with other Indian Ocean carriers, and maintains codeshare agreements with airlines such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines. Andre Viljoen took over as CEO in October 2025 as the carrier continued its post-restructuring fleet renewal.
