Merged — No Longer Operating Independently

As of 2026, AirAsia X's identity is in flux amid group-wide consolidation: reporting from January 2026 describes the long-haul 'AirAsia X' brand being folded into a single unified 'AirAsia' brand alongside the group's short-haul operations, and the airline's listed parent company, AirAsia X Berhad, formally renamed itself 'AirAsia Group Berhad' effective July 2026 after acquiring Capital A's aviation businesses. Exactly which operating brand and flight-code details (including 'D7') persist under the new single-brand structure remained unconfirmed in the sources reviewed, so this should be treated as an ongoing, not yet fully settled, restructuring.

History

AirAsia X began as FlyAsianXpress in 2006, a short-lived regional carrier in Malaysian Borneo, before relaunching in September 2007 as AirAsia X, a long-haul, low-cost sister carrier to AirAsia. It opened its first long-haul route, from Kuala Lumpur to Australia's Gold Coast, in November 2007, and later listed on Bursa Malaysia in 2013. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the airline into a major debt-restructuring process, which it completed with court approval in March 2022.

Current Operations

AirAsia X has historically flown Airbus A330 widebodies from its Kuala Lumpur hub to long-haul leisure and connecting markets across Asia-Pacific and beyond, with a Bahrain hub and revived London-Gatwick service reported for 2026, while the group has also signaled a longer-term shift toward an all-narrowbody A321 fleet by around 2031. As of 2026 the airline is in the middle of a group-wide brand and corporate consolidation, described further below.
