History

SilkAir traced its origins to Tradewinds, founded in 1975, and was rebranded as SilkAir on 1 April 1992 to serve as Singapore Airlines' regional wing across Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, East Asia, and northern Australia. It was the site of the only fatal hull loss in its history, SilkAir Flight 185, which crashed in Indonesia in December 1997 killing all 104 aboard in a disaster whose cause remained disputed between investigating authorities. Singapore Airlines announced in May 2018 that it would merge SilkAir into the mainline carrier, and the airline's booking systems, routes, and staff were progressively folded into Singapore Airlines (and Scoot) through 2019-2021.

Current Operations

SilkAir no longer exists as an operating airline. It was fully absorbed into parent Singapore Airlines (with some routes transferred to budget affiliate Scoot instead), and all remaining SilkAir services and its "MI" flight code were discontinued by mid-2021.
