History

Air Astana was founded in 2001 as a joint venture between Kazakhstan's state holding company (now Samruk-Kazyna) and UK defense group BAE Systems, and began commercial operations in May 2002. It grew to become Kazakhstan's flag carrier and largest airline, expanding its fleet and international network over two decades under long-serving CEO Peter Foster, who retired in March 2026 after nearly 21 years leading the airline. BAE Systems progressively reduced its founding stake through Air Astana's 2024 IPO and subsequent share sales, with reports in late 2025/early 2026 indicating BAE's holding had fallen to roughly 7-15% as it moved toward a full exit.

Current Operations

Air Astana operates a modern fleet built around Airbus A320neo-family narrowbodies and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, serving more than 60 destinations from dual hubs at Almaty (ALA) and Astana (NUR/renamed several times with Kazakhstan's capital). It holds a dominant position in Kazakhstan's domestic market and became a dual-listed public company via an IPO on the London Stock Exchange, the Astana International Exchange, and the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange in February 2024. Its low-cost subsidiary FlyArystan, launched in 2019, has operated under its own separate air operator's certificate since April 2024. Air Astana is not a member of any global alliance but maintains bilateral codeshare agreements with carriers including Lufthansa, S7 Airlines, and Japan Airlines.
