History

Biman Bangladesh Airlines was established on 4 January 1972, shortly after Bangladesh's independence, and began flight operations the following month as the country's state-owned flag carrier. It held a monopoly on domestic aviation for over two decades until private carriers were permitted to enter the market in 1996, and was converted from a state corporation into a public limited company in 2007. The airline endured heavy financial losses through the mid-2000s before returning to profitability around 2014-15 following a restructuring and fleet-renewal program.

Current Operations

Biman operates a fleet that includes Boeing 787-8/-9 Dreamliners, 777-300ERs, 737-800s and De Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprops from its main hub at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, with secondary bases at Chittagong and Sylhet. It serves roughly 30 destinations across South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, remains wholly owned by the Government of Bangladesh, and has continued fleet-modernization efforts with additional Boeing orders as of the mid-2020s.
