History

Belavia was formally established in 1996 out of the reorganized Belarusian Civil Aviation Association as the state-owned flag carrier of Belarus, based at Minsk National Airport. The airline expanded its fleet and network through the 2000s and 2010s, but its trajectory changed sharply after the May 2021 forced diversion of Ryanair Flight 4978 to Minsk, which the EU attributed to Belarusian state action against a dissident journalist aboard.

Current Operations

In direct response to the 2021 incident, the EU, UK, and Switzerland banned Belavia from their airspace and added the airline to sanctions lists in late 2021, and Ukrainian airspace has also been closed to it since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine; these restrictions remained in force as of 2026 and have cut Belavia's route map roughly in half, from around 55 destinations to a network of roughly 20-28 destinations concentrated in Russia, the CIS, the Middle East, and a handful of other non-sanctioning states. The state-owned carrier has continued operating an Airbus A330-200 and Boeing 737-800 fleet under these constraints, reportedly acquiring some replacement aircraft via Gambian registration as a workaround to sanctions-driven leasing and maintenance restrictions — a fluid, closely watched situation given Belarus's continued isolation from Western aviation markets.
