History
Volotea was founded by former Vueling executives Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros and launched commercial flights on 5 April 2012 from Venice Marco Polo Airport, pursuing a strategy of connecting mid-sized European cities that larger carriers underserved. Backed by private-equity investors (principally CCMP Capital, alongside Axis Participaciones Empresariales and Corpfin Capital), the airline expanded its base network steadily through the 2010s and 2020s across France, Italy, Spain, Greece and other markets, building a reputation as a specialist regional connector in the European low-cost segment.
Current Operations
Volotea operates an all-Airbus narrowbody fleet of around 44-45 A319 and A320 aircraft (having retired its last Boeing 717 in January 2021, the final European operator of that type) and, as of late 2025, reported having carried over 80 million passengers cumulatively since launch. The airline runs a multi-base, point-to-point model rather than a classic hub-and-spoke network, with roughly 21 operating bases across France, Italy, Spain and elsewhere in Europe, including Venice, Asturias, Nantes, Bordeaux, Palermo and Marseille among its largest; it operates more than 430 routes, over half of them exclusive to Volotea, connecting over 110 small and mid-sized European cities in 17 countries. Volotea is not a member of any of the three global alliances but maintains codeshare/interline links with carriers such as Eurowings, ITA Airways and Frenchbee. It was named Europe's leading low-cost airline by Skytrax and World Travel Awards judging in recent years.
