History

Yemenia traces its roots to Yemen Airlines, which received its air operator's certificate in August 1962 and became Yemen's flag carrier, later taking the Yemenia name. The airline is remembered internationally for the crash of Flight 626 on 30 June 2009, which killed 152 of 153 people aboard while approaching Moroni, Comoros — its deadliest accident. Operations were severely disrupted from 2015 onward by Yemen's civil war, including the 2011 destruction by fire of its Sana'a head office during fighting, forcing intermittent and reduced service ever since.

Current Operations

Yemenia's operations remain severely constrained by Yemen's ongoing civil war and infrastructure damage; as of mid-2024 it was flying to only a handful of domestic and international destinations from Sanaa and Aden, and reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes in May 2025 destroyed all four of the airline's operational aircraft. As of 2026 the airline's fleet and network status remain fluid and difficult to verify independently given the security situation, and it should be treated as operating only a minimal, unstable schedule rather than a normal full-service carrier. It previously flew an all-Airbus fleet (A320/A330 family).
