Sun Country Airlines

History

Sun Country Airlines was incorporated on 2 July 1982 and flew its first revenue flight on 20 January 1983. The airline filed for bankruptcy twice, in 2001 and 2008, before stabilizing under Davis family ownership from 2011, then pivoted to an ultra-low-cost, hybrid passenger/charter/cargo model under CEO Jude Bricker starting in 2017, including a 2019 cargo partnership with Amazon Air. Apollo Global Management held a majority stake from 2017 and took the airline public on Nasdaq in March 2021, before Allegiant Travel Company agreed to acquire Sun Country in 2025 and completed the acquisition on 13 May 2026.

Current Operations

Sun Country continues to operate scheduled passenger service, charter flights (military, sports teams, casino charters), and cargo flying for Amazon Air from its Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) base, using an all-Boeing 737 fleet. As of 2026 it operates as a subsidiary of Allegiant Travel Company following Allegiant's completed acquisition of Sun Country on 13 May 2026, ending Sun Country's run as an independent, separately Nasdaq-listed carrier (ticker SNCY, 2021-2026); the companies have indicated Sun Country's Minneapolis operations and brand identity are being maintained in the near term alongside Allegiant's.
