History

TAM began as Táxi Aéreo Marília, a regional air-taxi operator founded on 21 February 1961 in Marília, São Paulo state, before evolving into TAM - Transportes Aéreos Regionais in 1976 and merging its regional and mainline operations under the TAM Linhas Aéreas name in 2000. It grew into Brazil's largest airline, joined Star Alliance in May 2010, and in June 2012 completed a landmark merger with Chile's LAN Airlines to form LATAM Airlines Group, one of Latin America's largest airline holding companies.

Current Operations

TAM no longer operates as an independent airline: it now flies as LATAM Airlines Brasil, the Brazilian subsidiary of LATAM Airlines Group, having switched the combined group from Star Alliance to Oneworld in March 2014 and then exited Oneworld entirely in May 2020. The TAM name and "JJ" callsign are still used on LATAM Brasil-operated flights as a heritage designation, but the airline's commercial identity, fleet planning and network are fully integrated into LATAM Airlines Group, which operates a hub at São Paulo-Guarulhos.
