Germania

History

Germania traced its roots to Special Air Transport (SAT), founded in Cologne in 1978, and later grew into a Berlin-based German leisure and scheduled carrier flying under the Germania brand with a fleet of Airbus and Fokker/Embraer aircraft to European holiday and city destinations. Despite periodic restructuring, the airline struggled financially in its final years amid rising competition and fuel costs.

Current Operations

Germania is defunct as an independent airline: it declared insolvency and abruptly ceased all flight operations on 4–5 February 2019, stranding passengers and triggering repatriation efforts. A separate, previously spun-off Swiss subsidiary, Germania Flug (est. 2014), was not part of the German insolvency and continued flying charter/leisure routes for a period under the "HolidayJet" brand for Swiss tour operator Hotelplan, but this is a distinct legal entity from the original German carrier. The core German Germania brand and its air operator's certificate have not returned to service since 2019.
