History

Bulgaria Air was established in 2002 as the designated successor flag carrier after the collapse of the original state airline Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, commencing operations on 4 December 2002 from Sofia. It was privatized in 2006 when a group led by regional carrier Hemus Air acquired it for around EUR 6.6 million, subsequently consolidating Hemus Air's and Viaggio Air's operations into the Bulgaria Air brand, and it became a full IATA member in November 2008.

Current Operations

Bulgaria Air operates a fleet of Airbus A319 and Embraer E190 aircraft from its main hub at Sofia Airport, with focus-city operations at Burgas and Varna, flying roughly 21 scheduled routes across Europe and the Middle East alongside seasonal and charter services for tour operators; it also performs wet-lease flying for Air Serbia. It is owned by Bulgarian financial-industrial group Chimimport AD and is not a member of any of the three major global airline alliances.
