History
This Cyprus Airways is a distinct company from Cyprus's original flag carrier of the same name, which operated from 1947 until it ceased operations on 9 January 2015 after the European Commission ruled that state aid it had received was illegal, rendering it bankrupt and forcing liquidation. The present-day Cyprus Airways was incorporated as Charlie Airlines Ltd in early 2016, later acquired rights to the Cyprus Airways brand and trademark, obtained its air operator's certificate in March 2017, and launched scheduled operations in June 2017 as an unrelated successor using the historic name.
Current Operations
The current Cyprus Airways operates an all-Airbus fleet including A319/A320 narrowbodies and A220-300s from its hub at Larnaca International Airport, describing itself as the largest airline based in Cyprus. It flies a regional network linking Europe and the Middle East and holds interline agreements with carriers including Air India, Bulgaria Air, Qatar Airways, and Sky Express; a planned 2024 base expansion in Ljubljana was reportedly cancelled amid management changes and engine-related issues.
