History
Royal Brunei Airlines was established on 18 November 1974 and began flying in May 1975 as Brunei's national carrier. It set a notable aviation record in 1990 with an approximately 18-hour nonstop flight from Seattle to Nairobi to reposition an aircraft, one of the longest commercial flights of its era. The airline has remained wholly state-owned and has built a long-haul niche connecting Brunei to Europe, Australia and Asia via its Boeing 787 fleet.
Current Operations
Royal Brunei Airlines operates a compact fleet of roughly 12 aircraft — seven Airbus A320neo and five Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners — with four additional 787-9s on order for delivery from late 2028, serving around 22 destinations across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Oceania from its Bandar Seri Begawan (BWN) base. It is wholly owned by the Brunei government through the sovereign investment vehicle Darussalam Assets and is not a member of a major global alliance, instead relying on codeshare and interline agreements with 40-plus carriers including Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Qatar Airways. The airline operates under Islamic principles, serving halal meals and no alcohol on board, and has repeatedly won "World's Leading Cabin Crew" and similar regional awards in recent years.
