Merged — No Longer Operating Independently

LAN Airlines merged with Brazil's TAM Linhas Aéreas in 2012 to form LATAM Airlines Group. LAN's Chilean operating entity continued as a subsidiary but the LAN brand itself was retired around 2015-2016 in favor of unified 'LATAM' branding. LATAM Airlines Group (headquartered in Santiago, Chile) is the surviving parent group; it left the oneworld alliance in 2020.

History

LAN Airlines traces its roots to Línea Aérea Nacional de Chile, founded in 1929 by Chilean Air Force Commodore Arturo Merino Benítez and beginning scheduled operations in 1932 as Chile's state airline. It was privatized in the 1980s-90s and rebranded from 'LanChile' to 'LAN Airlines' in 2004 as it expanded across Latin America. In 2012 LAN completed a landmark merger with Brazilian carrier TAM Linhas Aéreas to form LATAM Airlines Group, one of the largest airline groups in Latin America.

Current Operations

LAN Airlines no longer exists as an independent brand: its Chilean operating subsidiary was renamed LATAM Airlines Chile, and from 2015-2016 the group fully adopted unified LATAM branding and livery across all its former LAN and TAM subsidiaries. LATAM Airlines Group, headquartered in Santiago with a hub at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, continues to operate LAN's former routes and fleet as part of the wider LATAM network across South America; the group exited the oneworld alliance in May 2020.
