History
The carrier began in 1990 as OceanAir, an Azorean airline that suspended operations in the mid-1990s before being acquired and relaunched by regional carrier SATA Air Açores as SATA Internacional in April 1998, serving as the Azores' international and inter-island scheduled airline alongside its turboprop sister carrier. Facing significant debt, the airline undertook a restructuring plan announced in 2015 aimed at cutting liabilities, and as part of that overhaul it was rebranded from SATA Internacional to Azores Airlines in October 2015, adopting a new green livery and whale-tail logo.
Current Operations
Operating today as Azores Airlines (the SATA International brand was retired in the 2015 rebrand), the carrier flies an all-Airbus A320-family fleet linking the Azores islands with mainland Portugal and international points including North America and continental Europe, with hubs at Ponta Delgada (João Paulo II Airport) and Lisbon. It remains part of the Azores regional government-linked Grupo SATA alongside sister carrier SATA Air Açores, and is not a member of any of the three major global alliances.
