History

Mandala Airlines was established on 17 April 1969 as a military-owned carrier linked to the Indonesian Army's Kostrad command, initially serving eastern Indonesian routes before expanding nationwide. Following military-business reforms it was sold to Indonesian conglomerate Cardig International in 2006 and repositioned as a modern low-cost carrier, but crushing debt forced it to suspend operations in January 2011. Singapore's Tiger Airways Holdings acquired the carrier and relaunched it as Tigerair Mandala in April 2012, but the venture again proved unsustainable.

Current Operations

Mandala Airlines no longer operates. Tigerair Mandala ceased all flights on 1 July 2014 after its shareholders withdrew funding, and the company was formally declared bankrupt by an Indonesian court in February 2015; there has been no subsequent relaunch of the Mandala brand or the RI code as of 2026.
