History

Indonesia AirAsia traces its roots to Awair (PT Air Wagon International), a domestic Indonesian carrier founded in 1999 that began flying in June 2000 under President Abdurrahman Wahid's backing before suspending operations in 2002 amid financial and licensing troubles. Malaysia's AirAsia Group took a stake and relaunched the carrier in December 2004, and it was formally rebranded Indonesia AirAsia on 1 December 2005 as the group's Indonesian affiliate. The airline was for a time barred from EU airspace over Indonesian aviation-safety concerns, a ban lifted in July 2010, and it has since grown into one of Indonesia's largest low-cost carriers.

Current Operations

Indonesia AirAsia operates an all-Airbus A320-family fleet on domestic routes across the Indonesian archipelago and regional international routes to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and other parts of Asia. It runs a multi-base structure anchored at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, with further operating bases in Bali (Denpasar), Medan, Surabaya and Lombok. It remains majority-controlled by Indonesian shareholder Fersindo Nusaperkasa alongside a substantial AirAsia Group (Capital A) stake, and continues to feed into AirAsia's wider pan-Asian low-cost network.
