History
Mongolia's national airline traces its roots to a civil air transport department established in 1946 and began regular scheduled domestic service on 7 July 1956 with an Antonov An-2 flying from Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk; the carrier was later formalized as MIAT Mongolian Airlines. It expanded steadily through the socialist era, reaching some 130 domestic airfields by 1970, and launched its first international routes to Moscow, Irkutsk and Beijing in 1987. Following Mongolia's transition to a market economy in the 1990s it modernized its fleet with Western jets, overcoming a difficult safety record from that decade (its last fatal accident was in 1998) to become a more conventional international carrier.
Current Operations
MIAT Mongolian Airlines, the country's state-owned flag carrier, operates a fleet including Boeing 787-9s, 737-800/MAX 8 narrowbodies, Bombardier CRJ700s and a 757 freighter, serving roughly 20 destinations across Asia, Europe and beyond from its hub at Chinggis Khaan International Airport near Ulaanbaatar. It resumed domestic flights in June 2023 after a 15-year hiatus and holds codeshare agreements with carriers including Air China, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Korean Air and Turkish Airlines, while pursuing growth as a transit hub between East Asia and Europe; it is not a member of any global alliance.
