History
Malindo Air was launched in 2013 as a joint venture between Malaysia's National Aerospace and Defence Industries (holding 51%) and Indonesia's Lion Air Group, beginning commercial service on 22 March 2013 with a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu. It initially positioned itself as a hybrid carrier blending low-cost fares with full-service amenities, before transitioning fully to a full-service model in 2019. On 28 April 2022 the airline was rebranded as Batik Air Malaysia, aligning it with Lion Air Group's Batik Air brand used in Indonesia.
Current Operations
Batik Air Malaysia operates a fleet of roughly 30 aircraft, including Boeing 737-800s, 737 MAX 8s and Airbus A330-300s, flying to around 79 destinations across the Asia-Pacific region from its main base at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. It remains a subsidiary of Indonesia's Lion Air Group and is not a member of any of the three major global alliances, though it maintains a range of codeshare partnerships.
