History

Interjet (operated by ABC Aerolíneas) launched service in December 2005 as a low-cost carrier owned by the Alemán family's Grupo Alemán, initially basing itself at Toluca International Airport before expanding hubs to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancún, and Monterrey. It grew into one of Mexico's largest airlines, flying an Airbus A320-family fleet and, from 2012, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 as a launch customer in the Americas. Chronic tax debts dating to 2013, compounded by the COVID-19 collapse in air travel, pushed the airline into a terminal financial crisis: it suspended all operations in December 2020, thousands of employees went unpaid and struck in January 2021, and the carrier formally entered bankruptcy in April 2021 before a Mexican court ordered its liquidation in April 2023.

Current Operations

Interjet does not operate. The airline halted all flights in December 2020 after failing to pay fuel suppliers amid roughly 3 billion pesos of accumulated debt, entered formal Mexican bankruptcy proceedings in April 2021, and in April 2023 a federal court ordered the company liquidated and its remaining assets auctioned, ending any prospect of it resuming flights. Its former Airbus A320-family and Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft were repossessed, sold, or scrapped, and its route network and share of the Mexican low-cost market were absorbed by rivals such as Volaris and VivaAerobus.
