History
United Airways (BD) Limited was founded in 2005 by Captain Tasbirul Ahmed Choudhury and a group of Bangladeshi entrepreneurs, and began domestic operations on 10 July 2007 with flights linking Dhaka, Sylhet and Chattogram, later adding international routes to Kolkata, Dubai, London and Kuala Lumpur from 2009. It became the first airline listed on Bangladesh's stock exchanges (Dhaka and Chittagong, ticker UNITEDAIR) in July 2010, and operated a mixed fleet of ATR 72s, Bombardier Dash 8s, McDonnell Douglas MD-83s and Airbus A310s. A UK court ordered it to rebrand in 2011 following a trademark dispute with the unrelated US carrier United Airlines.
Current Operations
United Airways (BD) does not operate today. Mounting financial distress led to an operational suspension in September 2014, and a subsequent inquiry uncovered large-scale financial misconduct, including inflated aircraft-purchase prices, fictitious spare-parts transactions and unauthorized withdrawals totalling roughly Tk1,138 crore (about 11 billion taka) in investor losses. The airline's grounded fleet was ultimately deemed uneconomical to repair, and it permanently ceased all operations on 6 March 2016; its founder later faced loan-scam and money-laundering charges. No successor airline has taken over its routes or the 4H code.
