SBD — Self Bag Drop

SBD completes the self-service check-in flow by extending it to baggage acceptance. After obtaining a boarding pass via a CUSS kiosk, web or mobile check-in, the passenger deposits their bag at the SBD unit unassisted.

Process Flow

A typical SBD flow: (1) Passenger scans boarding pass (barcode or QR). (2) Bag is placed on the belt. (3) System checks weight and dimensions. (4) Bag tag is automatically printed and affixed, or the passenger is prompted to attach it. (5) Once confirmed, the belt draws the bag into the system. (6) If excess baggage fees apply, the payment integration activates.

Fully Automated vs Agent-Assisted

In fully automated SBD units, the entire process is handled by the system. In an agent-assisted (hybrid) model, a single airport agent monitors several SBD units simultaneously and intervenes where exceptions occur.

BCBP Integration

SBD reads the boarding pass using the IATA BCBP (Bar Coded Boarding Pass) standard. This means the same reader device handles both paper and mobile boarding passes.
