CUSS is the IATA standard that opens airport self-service check-in infrastructure to common use. It allows multiple airline check-in applications to run on a single kiosk.

Difference from CUTE

CUTE (Common Use Terminal Equipment) primarily covers agent-operated check-in counters. CUSS focuses on self-service kiosks where passengers interact directly. The two are complementary; large airports typically deploy both simultaneously.

CUSS 1.x and CUSS 2.x

CUSS 1.x is the Java-based kiosk application model defined under IATA RP 1706. CUSS 2.x (2018+) moves to a REST/JSON API architecture, enabling web-based application integration. CUSS 2.x also supports mobile device integration and remote check-in scenarios.

Relationship with CUPPS

CUSS 2.x is aligned with the CUPPS framework. While CUPPS covers agent-operated check-in and gate positions (succeeding legacy CUTE), CUSS remains the distinct standard for passenger-operated self-service devices. The two are complementary standards within the IATA Common Use family.

How It Works

The passenger approaches the kiosk and initiates a session by scanning a passport, boarding pass or entering a booking reference. The kiosk connects to the airline's DCS/PSS, completes check-in, assigns a seat and issues a boarding pass — printed or sent to mobile. The passenger is then directed to an SBD (Self Bag Drop) point if checking luggage.

Airport Benefits

CUSS eliminates the need for airports to maintain a dedicated kiosk fleet for each airline. Kiosk capacity management becomes flexible, and terminal space is used more efficiently.
