A Departure Control System (DCS) is the operational software used by airlines to manage check-in, seat assignment, boarding pass issuance and flight capacity from the check-in counter through to gate departure.

The DCS is the central system that manages the airline's check-in process. It handles everything from passenger check-in to gate boarding, coordinating the entire departure workflow.
Core Functions
A DCS performs the following functions: passenger check-in and seat assignment, boarding pass issuance, baggage acceptance and tagging, load control and weight & balance, dangerous goods (DG) acceptance, special service request (SSR) tracking, and gate boarding control.
Relationship with PSS
The DCS does not operate in isolation. It receives reservation and ticketing data from the PSS (Passenger Service System) and translates that data into the operational check-in process. In some vendor platforms, PSS and DCS are integrated within the same system; in larger airlines they may exist as separate layers.
Common-Use Environments
In common-use airport infrastructure (CUTE, CUSS), the DCS enables multiple airlines to process passengers from the same physical check-in counter. In this configuration, the DCS integrates with the CUTE server via API or direct protocol.
