Definition

A PNL (Passenger Name List) is the pre-departure message transmitted by the airline to the ground handling agent, handling company or partner airline, listing all passengers on the flight with their names, seat numbers and SSR information.

PNL — Passenger Name List

The PNL is the foundational message in the pre-departure information chain. Generated automatically by the PSS/DCS, it is transmitted to the ground handler to enable ground operation preparation.

PNL Content

A standard PNL message includes: flight number, date and route; total passenger count and cabin breakdown; per-passenger name, seat number and check-in status; SSR codes (wheelchair, special meal, UMNR etc.); FFP tier information (for priority passenger identification).

Use with ADL

The PNL transmits the initial passenger list. Last-minute changes — late check-in, no-shows, additional passengers — are communicated via an ADL (Additions and Deletions List) message. The ground handler uses the PNL as the baseline and keeps it current via ADL updates.

Transmission Timing

The PNL is typically sent 4–6 hours before departure, though timing varies by airline and procedure. IATA AIRIMP (Airline Industry Reservations Interline Message Procedures) standardises the message format.

Operational Use

The ground handler uses the PNL for: cabin catering and service planning, wheelchair and assistance scheduling, VIP reception arrangements, security list preparation. It is also used in passenger load and balance calculations.
