Definition

An SSR (Special Service Request) is the standardised IATA data field used to record passenger requests for special services — wheelchair assistance, special meals, medical support, infant bassinets — in the PNR using four-letter codes such as WCHR, VGML and MEDA.

SSR — Special Service Request

The SSR is the standard messaging field used to communicate a passenger's non-standard service requirement to the airline. It is an integral part of the PNR and is tracked from reservation through to the boarding process.

SSR Codes

SSR requests are identified by four-letter standard codes. Some of the most common SSR codes include:

WCHRwheelchair required; passenger cannot climb stairs but can walk
WCHCfully immobile; requires carrying from seat to aircraft door
WCMPmanual wheelchair, passenger's own equipment
VGMLvegan meal
KSMLKosher meal
MOMLMuslim meal (Halal)
MEDAmedical case; requires physician declaration
BSCTinfant bassinet
UMNRunaccompanied minor
DEPUdeportee under escort

Difference from OSI

SSRs are requests to which the airline must respond (confirm or decline). OSI (Other Service Information) items are informational notes passed to the airline that require no action.

Transmission Chain

An SSR is added to the PNR at booking via GDS or the airline's own channel. It is transferred from the PSS to the DCS. At check-in, the agent verifies SSR confirmation status; the cabin crew sees SSR codes on their service lists.

Operational Impact

SSR requests directly affect flight preparation: meal orders, wheelchair allocation, pre-flight medical clearance processes and special passenger assistance planning are all managed through SSR data.
