History

Volaris launched revenue service in March 2006 as a Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier backed by investors including Indigo Partners. It expanded rapidly by absorbing routes and demand left by the collapse of Aerocalifornia and Mexicana in 2010, and became the first North American operator of the Airbus A320neo in September 2016. The airline has since grown into Mexico's largest carrier by passengers carried, while also facing periods of controversy, including lawsuits over COVID-19-era refund practices.

Current Operations

Volaris is Mexico's largest airline by passenger volume, holding roughly 42% domestic market share, and operates an all-Airbus A320-family fleet (A319, A320, A320neo, A321, A321neo) from hubs at Mexico City (MEX), Guadalajara (GDL) and Tijuana (TIJ), with additional focus cities including Cancún, León and Monterrey. It maintains codeshare agreements with carriers such as Frontier Airlines, Condor, Iberia and Hainan Airlines, and operates related affiliate carriers Volaris Costa Rica and Volaris El Salvador. In December 2025 Volaris agreed to combine with rival Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus under a joint holding company, a deal intended to create Mexico's largest low-cost airline group, though as of 2026 Volaris continues to operate and sell tickets under its own brand pending completion of that arrangement.
