History

Air Tahiti Nui was established on 31 October 1996 and began commercial operations on 20 November 1998 as the long-haul international flag carrier of French Polynesia, complementing the domestic operator Air Tahiti. Majority owned by the Government of French Polynesia (around 84% as of recent filings, with additional local investors holding the remainder), the airline built its identity around nonstop and near-nonstop long-haul service linking Tahiti to North America, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, transitioning its widebody fleet from Airbus A340s to A330s and, most recently, to Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

Current Operations

Air Tahiti Nui operates a fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners (four in service as of mid-2025, with further examples on order) from its home base at Faa'a International Airport near Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia. It flies long-haul routes connecting French Polynesia to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Paris (via technical stops), Tokyo, Auckland, and, more recently, a new nonstop link to Australia, positioning itself as French Polynesia's long-haul flag carrier. It is not a member of any global alliance but maintains extensive codeshare and partnership agreements with carriers including Air France, Alaska Airlines, LATAM, Emirates, WestJet, Air Tahiti, and Air Rarotonga.
