History
Turkmenistan Airlines was established on 4 May 1992 as the newly independent country's state flag carrier, succeeding Soviet-era Aeroflot operations in Turkmenistan, and converted from a state enterprise into a state-owned joint-stock company in 2017 while remaining fully under government control. The carrier has long been characterized by an unusually restricted, state-controlled route network and limited fleet renewal, punctuated by a roughly ten-month suspension of its European operations after the EU grounded it on safety grounds in February 2019. It has continued modernizing its fleet in the 2020s, including new Boeing 777-300ERs delivered in December 2023 and Airbus A330-200P2F freighters added in 2023, even as Turkmenistan's broader aviation sector remains one of the world's most isolated, with tightly limited international connectivity set by government policy.
Current Operations
Turkmenistan Airlines operates an all-Boeing fleet (including Boeing 777-300ERs introduced in December 2023) plus Airbus A330-200P2F freighters (acquired in spring 2023, the first of their type based in Central Asia) from its hub at Ashgabat International Airport. As of mid-2025 reporting the carrier served around 5 domestic and roughly 14 international destinations across 13 countries — a notably narrow network reflecting Turkmenistan's broader isolation from the global aviation market and the government's tight control over air travel in and out of the country. It holds interline/codeshare agreements with carriers including Belavia, S7 Airlines, Hahn Air, and Coyne Air, but is not part of any global alliance; its international operations were also disrupted for roughly ten months following an EU flight-safety suspension imposed on 4 February 2019, before European services resumed.
