History

Cayman Airways was established on 7 August 1968 after the Cayman Islands government purchased a 51% stake in Cayman Brac Airways from Costa Rica's LACSA, beginning service with a single Douglas DC-3; the government took full (100%) ownership in December 1977. Through the 1970s and 1980s the airline expanded its fleet through BAC One-Eleven and Boeing 727 jets, building a route network across the Caribbean and to Florida while weathering intense competition and periodic financial difficulty. It has remained the government-owned national flag carrier of the Cayman Islands ever since, modernizing its fleet over the following decades toward Boeing narrowbody jets.

Current Operations

Cayman Airways remains fully owned by the Cayman Islands Government and operates from its George Town, Grand Cayman hub at Owen Roberts International Airport, flying scheduled passenger and cargo services on Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 jets to destinations across the Caribbean and the United States, supplemented by de Havilland Twin Otter and Saab 340 turboprops on regional inter-island routes including to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Its 737 MAX fleet was grounded following the 2019 worldwide MAX groundings but returned to service in 2021 after regulatory clearance. The airline holds no global alliance membership but maintains interline agreements with carriers including Air Canada and Copa Airlines.
