Aviation History
The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory, and their flag carrier, Cayman Airways, was established in 1968 when the territorial government acquired majority ownership of Cayman Brac Airways from Costa Rica's LACSA; it became wholly government-owned in 1977. Operating today under the territory's own civil aviation authority (with UK oversight for international standards), Cayman Airways has grown from small propeller aircraft to a modern Boeing 737 jet fleet connecting Grand Cayman to the United States and the Caribbean.
The Cayman Islands government acquired 51% of Cayman Brac Airways from LACSA on 7 August 1968, forming Cayman Airways and launching international service to Kingston, Jamaica.
Cayman Airways became fully owned by the territorial government in December 1977.
The airline introduced its first jet aircraft to serve a new Houston route.
A Boeing 727-200 joined the fleet, enabling regional expansion and premium cabin service, ahead of a later shift to Boeing 737-300s.
In November 2018, Cayman Airways took delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8, becoming the first airline to operate the type in the Caribbean.
