History

The airline began as Fiji Airways, registered in 1947 (as Katafaga Estates Ltd) and operating its first commercial flight in 1951 with a de Havilland Dragon Rapide. Following Fiji's independence, the Fijian government took a controlling interest and renamed the carrier Air Pacific in the early-to-mid 1970s, a name it carried for close to four decades while serving as Fiji's international flag carrier. The airline reverted to its original name, Fiji Airways, in a rebrand announced in 2012 that formally took effect on 27 June 2013, alongside the creation of a separate domestic subsidiary, Fiji Link.

Current Operations

Fiji Airways operates a fleet of around 14 aircraft as of August 2025 -- Airbus A350-900s and A330-200/300s for long-haul routes to Australia, New Zealand, North America and Asia, and Boeing 737-800/MAX 8 narrowbodies for regional Pacific routes -- from dual hubs at Nadi International Airport and Nausori (Suva) International Airport. It serves roughly 28 destinations and reportedly carries around 64% of all visitors who fly into Fiji. The airline became a full member of the oneworld alliance on 1 April 2025, having previously held oneworld Connect partner status. Ownership is split between the Government of Fiji (50%), the Fiji National Provident Fund (30%), Qantas (16%) and Air New Zealand (4%).
