Blue Panorama Airlines

History

Blue Panorama Airlines was founded in Rome in September 1998 by Franco Pecci, Sandro Giulianelli and Antonio De Ponti, initially flying charter services for tour operators before adding scheduled routes from 2000. It launched a low-cost subsidiary brand, Blu-Express, in 2005. Takeover talks with Alitalia in 2011–2012 fell through, and the airline entered extraordinary administration (a form of insolvency protection) in 2014 before being acquired by Italian travel group UVET in 2017. In 2019 UVET announced Blue Panorama would be rebranded as "Luke Air" as part of a wider relaunch, but the airline could not overcome its financial problems and suspended operations in October 2021, with liquidation confirmed by a Milan court in December 2022.

Current Operations

Blue Panorama Airlines does not operate today. The carrier began rebranding as "Luke Air" starting in October 2019, with the new identity taking effect on its website and operations from around September 2021, but the rebrand did not save the business: on 27 October 2021 the airline (by then flying as Luke Air, operated by Blue Panorama Airlines) suspended all flights, citing financial difficulties worsened by the COVID-19 collapse in air travel. Restructuring efforts under new leadership failed, and on 15 December 2022 a Milan court ruled the company's composition-with-creditors proposal inadmissible, effectively ending its history and sending the company into liquidation. Its former Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Malpensa operations were not taken over by a direct successor. Note: Blue Panorama/Luke Air is a separate airline from Air Italy (the former Meridiana, backed by Qatar Airways), which ceased operations independently in February 2020 — the two are sometimes confused but had no corporate relationship.
