History
Skymark Airlines was established in November 1996 and began flying in September 1998 as Japan's first low-cost carrier, later pursuing an ambitious expansion under entrepreneur Shinichi Nishikubo that included orders for Airbus A380 and A330 aircraft. Currency swings and mounting competition from newer LCCs left it unable to sustain that expansion, and it filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2015 with roughly ¥71 billion in liabilities.
Current Operations
Skymark exited bankruptcy protection in 2016 after creditors approved a restructuring in which Integral Corporation took majority control (with ANA and a banking consortium taking minority stakes), and it was re-listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December 2022. It now operates a Boeing 737-800 fleet (with 737 MAX deliveries scheduled 2025-2027) from its main base at Haneda Airport, with secondary bases at Kobe and Naha, flying domestic Japanese routes; it operates independently without codeshare ties to a global alliance.
