History
Aerolíneas Argentinas was formed in 1949 through the merger of four Argentine carriers and began operations in December 1950 as the country's flag carrier. It was privatized in 1990, fell into serious financial distress, and was renationalized by the Argentine government in July 2008 after the state acquired roughly 99.4% of its shares. Sister carrier Austral Líneas Aéreas, which the group had long operated as a separate brand, was formally merged into Aerolíneas Argentinas' operations in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Current Operations
Aerolíneas Argentinas operates a mixed fleet of narrowbody Boeing 737-700/-800/MAX 8 and Embraer 190 aircraft for domestic and regional routes, plus Airbus A330-200 widebodies for intercontinental service, from dual hubs at Buenos Aires' Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (domestic/regional) and Ministro Pistarini/Ezeiza International Airport (international). It has been a SkyTeam member since August 2012 and remains wholly state-owned, though privatization proposals under the current Argentine government have generated significant union opposition and remain unresolved as of 2026.
