Yield Management — Airline Yield Management
Commercial · revenue-management
Definition
Yield management (revenue management) is the practice of dynamically controlling the availability and price of airline seats to maximise revenue from each flight — opening and closing booking classes (RBDs) in real time based on demand, booking pace and remaining capacity.
Yield Management
Yield management — more broadly called revenue management (RM) — is the discipline that determines what price a seat is sold for, to whom, and when. It is arguably the most commercially impactful function in airline management.
The Core Problem
An airline seat is a perishable asset: once the aircraft departs, unsold seats generate zero revenue. The challenge is to sell as many seats as possible at the highest achievable prices without leaving capacity unsold.
How It Works
Revenue management systems (RMS) control the availability of booking classes (RBDs) in the CRS in real time. When demand for a flight is high, low-priced RBDs are closed, forcing later bookings into higher-priced classes. When demand is weak, lower RBDs remain open longer to stimulate sales.
Forecasting and Optimisation
Modern RMS platforms use statistical forecasting (historical booking patterns, events calendar, competitive fare data) to predict demand and set optimal availability controls. The system updates availability dozens of times per day as new bookings arrive and market conditions change.
Overbooking
Yield management includes deliberate overbooking — selling more seats than physically exist on the aircraft. This accounts for the statistical likelihood of no-shows and cancellations. Overbooking models are calibrated to minimise the risk of passengers being denied boarding (denied boarding compensation is governed by EC 261/2004 in Europe).
Dynamic Pricing and NDC
Traditional yield management works within the constraints of filed ATPCO fares. NDC and continuous pricing initiatives allow airlines to generate offer-based prices dynamically, bypassing the rigid fare filing process and enabling true real-time price personalisation.
